Anyone dealt with being passed over for promotion by someone they've trained? Compensation I'm baffled, I have many years experience and an impeccable record but I just found out that my trainee (with less than a year's experience) has gotten a promotion during a time when "the company is weathering through and no promotions or raises will be given". My trainee is now making more than I am, but is upset about it because they wanted to negotiate for more. They have no prior experience at any othe

I'm a millennial and my trainee is 5 years younger, just fyi this isn't a huge age gap or technical competence issue. It would be one thing if I'd been fired and then they needed a replacement... but they said to my trainee to keep the promotion a secret because "many people" are getting passed over. Except I'm now seeing several new high level hirings and promotions in my company on linked in.

It seems a clear enough sign to me that I'm no longer deemed valuable, or that I'm so docile they don't believe I'll go anywhere even if this is a full slap in the face. I'd appreciate stories from anyone who's been there, or advice though I think I know the obvious answer, or just commiseration because I can't trust anyone at my company now.

SoSpatzz . 2 hr. ago Do you have any conflict with management? What is the size and age of the company? How long have you been employed there. 1. Someone in upper management doesn't like you 2. Your character is lacking leadership traits 3. You do a great job in your frontline role and would be tough to replace

    4. Other individual is being groomed for management Some sort of mix of these at a guess. The questions I asked up top can have a larger bearing on the 'why' but the reason will boil down to those 4 points. Reply Share

Aggravating-Bike-397 2 hr. ago I would say this has nothing to do with OP. The trainee is probably related to someone at the executive leadership level. It's very odd to me that this trainee with very little experience gets promoted at a time when the company itself is not doing too well 3 Reply Share

Development-Alive 2 hr. ago . Not someone I trained but someone less accomplished than I was. It was that point that I realized that there are so many other factors at play. than your current job performance or accomplishments. In my case the other candidate solicited accolades from her customers that resulted in a key award. While I was quietly going about my job with a massive scope for my role I was resigned to let my accomplishments speak for themselves.

Alas, that wasn't near enough to my surprise. She got the promotion, helping get more females into IT leadership even though she hadn't actually delivered anything of consequence. I got a GREAT rating, good bonus but still didn't come close to what she got. Rather than reporting to her, I walked out the door to a competing Director role at another company. She was PIPed and pushed out the door within 1.5yrs.

Honestly, everything works out for the best. You need to ask your manager what this person accomplished or characteristics they have that you haven't displayed. Also know that there are often other factors at play.

Plastic_Interview_53 2 hr. ago What makes you want to stay at the job after that???give me one good reason. • flippermode 44 min. ago Yeah, that would have told me everything I needed to know. I'm assuming op is just venting and they know they need to look for another job but just wanted people's perspective.

WinkJewel 2 hr. ago Yes, I hired a person that started the first day of Covid shut down that I trained remotely. Once settled in, I gave her a large project that I coached her throughout; sitting in on all meetings & guiding her through the process. It was a successful project & she then got promoted to Director. This stung. The economic downturn hit & I was laid off.
